The much-delayed Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE) is likely to be operational from first week of October, more than twelve-and-half years after it was launched to reduce vehicle load on Delhi roads. Sources said Haryana government is keen to open the entire stretch of 135 kilometres connecting Sonipat to Palwal bypassing the national capital on October 2.
The issue of WPE, which forms part of the ring expressway around Delhi, had come up during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly web-based interaction with secretaries and chief secretaries on August 29. “Concern was expressed on the delay in execution of Western Peripheral Expressway in Haryana. Cabinet secretary should take a meeting with Government of Haryana and M/o Road Transport and Highways, review the project and ensure its early completion (by end of September 2018),” the minutes of the PRAGATI meeting said.
