THE RAILWAYS has started investigating what its officials believe is an “audacious” racket in which an unidentified man conducted “job interviews” inside the ministry’s headquarters, and issued “appointment letters” with forged signatures of former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu for the post of ticket collector.
Passengers on Mumbai’s Suburban Railway network will now be able to print out their railway tickets at Railway Stations by simply scanning their mobile phone screens at a kiosk, the Ministry of Railways said on Thursday.
The railways has signed an MoU with the union HRD ministry (MHRD) and the department of science and technology (DST) and has selected experts from various IITs and other engineering institutions to develop the technology.
In a good news for passengers, they have to now pay less for booking tour packages with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Railway board chairperson Ashwani Lohani has directed for reduction in the service charge by 10 per cent — from 25 per cent to 15 per cent — levied on the tickets booked through IRCTC’s website.
It will cover 7,300 stations in rural and remote areas that will serve not only the passengers but also the local masses. The railway stations in the rural areas will have kiosks for the local population.
In what could be termed as one of the most ambitious plans of the Indian Railways, the transporter is set to commission a feasibility and cost study for elevated railway tracks across the 10,000 km length of the Golden Quadrilateral connecting the four metros.
Train Accidents Have Come Down By 40-45 Percent, Says Railway Board, Hopes To Further Reduce Mishaps
Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani said that train accidents had come down by 40-45 percent in the current financial year as compared to the previous fiscal.
