In Assam, out of 230 railway stations under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), only 12 stations have closed-circuit camera installations to keep continuous vigil on the movement of people. Such drawbacks came to light after the twin murders took place on the same route in Upper Assam within 36 hours.
“The security and vigilance system of the railways in Assam is not adequate. We are trying our best to improve it. Currently, there are only 12 stations with CCTV facilities. Now we are trying to extend it. A proposal has already been submitted to the government,” Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said.
The DGP also admitted to the lack of adequate workforce in Government Railway Police. “I cannot say the exact current strength but it is not adequate for the state. Now we will also start checking the database of criminals who were acquitted earlier.” Read More
