As part of the attempts of central PSU Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), to double its production by 2020, Union coal secretary Susheel Kumar on Friday discussed issues confronted by the PSU with the state government and sought its cooperation to resolve them.
The coal PSU, a subsidiary of the Coal India Limited, produces nearly 125 million tonne per year.
Land acquisition near the coal mining area, environmental clearance, rehabilitation and resettlement are the key issues discussed during the meeting, chief secretary A P Padhi told reporters.
According to official sources, the state government urged the MCL to complete a resettlement colony, connecting roads, drinking water projects, electricity connection and other basic infrastructure for Angul district’s Hensamula villagers, who would be rehabilitated for a coal mining project. The state government also assured to sort out issues related to acquisition of land and obtaining forest and environment clearances for the coal mining projects. The MCL authorities sought the state government’s help to remove encroachments on the coal-bearing areas to expedite coal exploration.
“The chief secretary has promised us to sort out all issues faced by the MCL and we are hopeful of increasing coal production,” said the Union coal secretary.
Meanwhile, the state government signed an MoU with the ministries of coal and railway to form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for evacuation of coal through rail from Talcher coalfield.
The SPV is meant to augment the railway infrastructure by constructing additional railway lines and sidings for evacuating coal from the mines of the MCL, official sources said.
