The Indian Railways (IR) is on a mission to match the quality of quality of its stations and bring it at par with modernised airports. While it has already started work in some stations, it has come to light that the authorities have earmarked Rs 5,000 crore for the modernisation of at least 68 stations.
With the general elections approaching next year, the railways station development project would be a major milestone for the ruling BJP, considering the number of people who use the services of Indian Railways on a daily basis. An Economic Timesarticle indicated that the ministry of railways has already made the necessary budgetary allocations to the zonal railways and has asked for completion of the project by the end of this financial year.
