The state of hydro power in India has not been encouraging due to all round neglect of this segment for more than 50 years. Of the total hydro power potential of 148 GW, only about 45 GW has been harnessed so far and the share of hydro power is progressively reduced to a abysmally low level of 13 per cent of total power generation capacity. Hydro power has clear socio, economic and systemic advantages. It contributes to more than 50 per cent of the electricity generated in more than 60 countries gloablly.
It is clean, green, sustainable and in the longer run is the cheapest source of power. The levelized cost of generation of hydro power is 30-40 per cent of wind or solar power and 15-20 per cent of fossil power. Read More
