The Kalka Shimla Railway was built in 1898 to connect the then British Raj ‘Summer Capital’ Shimla with the rest of the Indian railway system. Crossing through striking mountains, 107 tunnels and 864 bridges were built along the route of this railway. The 96.54 km long Kalka Shimla Railway opened for traffic on November 9, 1903. In 2008, the Kalka Shimla Railway was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and added to the mountain railways of India. Shimla is a favoured spot for vacationers, irrespective of the season.
