The 5 per cent GST rate on coal will make electricity more affordable for poor people and farmers, who are already gaining from the fivefold increase in the pace of rural electrification compared to the year before the Narendra Modi government was sworn in, Piyush Goyal, the minister for power, coal, renewable energy and mines, said.
He said free electricity connections had been provided to 256.81 lakh BPL families up to April 30, and the Centre had released Rs 7,966 crore to states in the last fiscal, the highest ever. Read more
