Mumbai’s lifeline: How city’s local trains are being maintained for smooth daily functioning

Mumbai Suburban Railway, which is also known as ‘Mumbai’s lifeline’ is maintained and controlled by the Western Railway division along with the Central Railways zone of the Indian Railways. Most of the people travelling in Mumbai prefers to travel in these suburban railway trains also known as the Mumbai local trains.

The Western Railway zone of the has three EMU car sheds at Mumbai Central, Kandivali & Virar which are dedicated for round the clock maintenance of “Lifeline of Mumbai” known as Mumbai Suburban trains. Mumbai Central, Car shed was started functioning in 1928 and Kandivali Car shed in 1984, whereas Virar car shed which is newly constructed by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) and started functioning since 2012 has the infrastructure of the state of art technology.
