Number of Asia-Pacific renewables auctions grows in H1, India takes lead

A total of 32 auctions for renewable energy were held in the Asia-Pacific region in the first half of 2019, with India accounting for the majority, GlobalData calculates. The total number of renewables auctions was significantly higher than in the year-ago period when just one auction was issued. The total also compares with five auctions held in the second half of 2018.

Auction activity in January-June was led by India, which grabbed a 65.6% share with 21 auctions, in which the Solar Energy Corporation of India sought bids for almost 13 GW of capacity. Other large players were NTPC (BOM:532555) and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution with tender offers for 2 GW and 1.5 GW, respectively.

Kazakhstan took the second spot in the ranking with eight auctions, while Uzbekistan issued two auctions. Malaysia came fourth with one auction. Read More
