Even as the ministry of railways is pushing for vacuum bio-toilets in all coaches, Palakkad division of Southern Railway (SR) has retrofitted all 552 coaches owned by it with bio-toilets.
Bio-toilets are aimed at eliminating discharge of human waste along railway tracks and also ensuring that railway stations, not just in the division, but across the zonal railway are clean, said Pratap Singh Shami, divisional railway manager
Incidentally, the ministry had asked all zones and divisions to retrofit bio-toilets on all coaches by December 31 in the project where excreta are collected in tanks fitted beneath the lavatories.
This is converted into methane and water with the help of bacteria, avoiding spillage waste in the open and along tracks. Read More
