Prabhu pitches for green energy in Railways

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said that the Government was giving a big push to the use of renewable energy and electrification in the Railways for ensuring sustainability and cost efficiency. Stating that Railways was the biggest environment-friendly transportation, Mr Prabhu said it had been working on several activities on environment protection including afforestation, revival of old water bodies and cleanliness. Due to the Railways commitment towards environment protection, a separate Directorate for Environment was set up to deal with all environment issues arising out of Railway operations, the Minister said. Mr Prabhu said that managing operations with sustaining environment was a big challenge and the Railways was continuously working on mainstreaming sustainability in its strategy. He was speaking at the Roundtable discussion with non-railway stakeholders on development and initiatives for environment and housekeeping here. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Railway Board AK Mital said that the Indian Railways which was also the fourth largest freight transporter and despite it being the largest consumer of water and electricity, it was considered as green transporter due to its reduced Green House Gases emissions.
