Solar heaters, rain water harvesting plant and other renewable energy devices have become costlier because of GST.
Earlier, there was no tax on these items but under the new regime they are put under the 5% slab.
As per traders, these items were earlier tax-free because government wanted to promote their sale but now they are being looked at as a source of revenue as there has been a surge in demand of energy-efficient, ecologically helpful devices in the past few years.
“Over past five years, people have opted for green energy and devices that are not harmful for nature and save money spent on electricity. I don’t think 5% would deter people,” said Nitin Prabhakar, owner of a solar devices shop in the city.
