Power Grid’s Project Commissioning Scales New Highs At Rs 30,300 crore

In a record of sorts, state-owned power transmission major—the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited has commissioned transmission projects worth Rs 30,300 crore (unaudited) during 2015-16, which is the highest-ever commissioning achieved by the company in its history.

Union Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable energy, Piyush Goyal congratulated PowerGrid for an excellent performance.

The highlights of the year include establishment of two new international interconnections, one with Nepal and the other with Bangladesh.

Interconnection with Nepal, ‘Muzaffarpur (Bihar, India) – Dhalkebar (Nepal) transmission line’ was jointly dedicated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli via tele-inauguration, during the latter’s visit to India in February, 2016.

The 2nd interconnection with Bangladesh, ‘Surjyamaninagar (Tripura, India) – Comilla (Bangladesh)’ transmission line, was jointly dedicated by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina via video-conferencing. The Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Sarkar also joined the dedication through video-conferencing.

The Company’s board that met on April 2nd also noted that Powergrid has achieved the planned Capex of Rs 22,500 crore (provisional).

During FY16, tenders for transmission projects worth more than Rs 50,000 crore were released setting a new benchmark for highest-ever tenders in a single year by the company. Powergrid  that also Company also awarded contracts for 270 packages worth Rs 22,000 crore and Investment Approvals for projects worth Rs 13,200 crore were undertaken.

For the nine month period (April15-December, 2015), the Company had reported Total Income of Rs 15,320 crore and posted Profit After Tax of Rs 4,428 crore.

In its April 2 meeting, the board of Power Grid Corporation accorded approval for the following:

1. Investment approval for ‘Substation Extensions for Transmission System associated with Vindhyachal – V project of NTPC (Part-B)’ at an estimated cost of Rs. 287.99 Crore with commissioning schedule of June, 2018, matching with the commissioning schedule of Vindhyachal Pooling Station-Jabalpur Pooling Station 765kV D/C line to be implemented through TBCB route in 27 months from the date of investment approval.

2. Investment approval for ‘POWERGRID Works associated Western Region Strengthening Scheme – XV’ at an estimated cost of Rs. 46.57 Crore with commissioning schedule of January, 2018, matching with the commissioning schedule of Parli (New) (TBCB)-Solapur (POWERGRID) 765kV D/C and Parli (New) (TBCB) – Parli (POWERGRID) 400kV D/C (quad) lines to be implemented through TBCB route in 22 months from the date of investment approval.

3. Investment approval for ‘POWERGRID Works associated with Part-A of Transmission System for Gadarwara STPS of NTPC’ at an estimated cost of Rs. 47.77 Crore with commissioning schedule of May, 2017, matching with the commissioning schedule of transmission line to be implemented through TBCB route in 14 months from the date of investment approval.

4. Investment approval for Transmission System for Ultra Mega Solar Park in Anantpur District, Andhra Pradesh – Part C (Phase-III)’ at an estimated cost of Rs. 40.91 Crore with commissioning schedule of 19 months from the date of investment approval matching with the commissioning of associated solar park.

5. Investment approval for “Associated Transmission system for Nabinagar-ll TPS (3X660 MW)” at an estimated cost of Rs. 790.13 Crore with commissioning schedule of 38 months progressively from the date of investment approval.

6. Investment approval for “POWERGRID works associated with Common Transmission System for Phase-ll generation projects in Odisha” at an estimated cost of Rs. 844.64 Crore with commissioning schedule of 36 months progressively from the date of investment approval, however for 2 nos. of 400kV GIS line bays at Jharsuguda (Sundargarh) substation, commissioning schedule shall be 16 months from the date of investment approval to match with OPGC – Jharsuguda 400kV D/C line being implemented under TBCB.

7. Investment approval for “Eastern Region Strengthening Scheme-XV (ERSS-XV)” at an estimated cost of Rs. 454.11 Crore with commissioning schedule of 24 months progressively from the date of investment approval.

8. Investment approval for “Transmission System for Ultra Mega Solar Power Park at Tumkur (Pavagada), Karnataka-Phase-I” at an estimated cost of Rs. 810.48 Crore with commissioning schedule of 32 months from the date of investment approval. Best efforts would be made to commission various transmission elements with the commissioning of solar capacity.
