Tension prevailed in the town following series of arrests by the police since Friday in the wake of the strike by the workers of the Singareni Collieries. Undeclared prohibitory orders seem to be in place in the town. A bandh was observed in the town on Saturday to protest against the arrests and a bike rally was also taken out. To protest against what they called illegal arrests, the SCCL workers burnt an effigy of State government.
In Godavarikhani, over 100 persons were arrested. CITU State Secretary M Saibabu was picked up from his union office and also another trade union leader Raji Reddy was also arrested. Peddapalli district CPI (M) unit Secretary Yakaiah was also put under arrest. Read more
